Findings of $0.01–$0.02 keep appearing
One- and two-cent findings on multi-partial charges are arithmetic, not theft. Stripe rounds each proportional reversal independently; checks computed once over totals legitimately diverge by a cent or two.
Why it happens
A $100 charge refunded in $33.33/$33.33/$33.34 pieces produces independent roundings totalling one cent below any single-shot calculation. Every multi-partial charge carries this signature. The two-minor-unit tolerance exists precisely so these never reach your queue.
When noise becomes signal
Persistent growth concentrated on one charge family — same product, same partial pattern — suggests a systematic off-by-one in that flow’s refund code rather than rounding. Filter by charge attributes; concentration is the tell.
What not to do
Do not lower tolerance to zero to "catch everything" — you will catch everything, including hundreds of ghosts, and the queue’s credibility dies with them.
